Sight Glass Gaskets

The gasket is the highest-wear component in any sight glass assembly - the sealing ring that holds the window against the body and the body against your piping. WHAT IT IS

Why Sight Glass Gaskets Wear Out First

A sight glass carries two seals: one between the glass and the body, and one between the body and the pipe connection. Both are gaskets, and both age faster than the glass or the metal around them. Elastomers lose flexibility as heat drives out plasticizers, PTFE cold-flows under sustained load, and graphite can crack under repeated thermal cycling - which is why a gasket replacement is the standard maintenance action long before the window itself needs attention.

Fitting a gasket matched to the original bore and material matters: an oversized gasket bulges into the viewing area, an undersized one leaves a crevice where media can collect, and the wrong compound fails quickly. Choose the compound by the media and the temperature, not by habit. The table below shows typical published service ranges and the chemical families each material handles well - and the ones it does not. Compatibility at full concentration, elevated temperature and continuous duty should always be confirmed against the original sight glass datasheet.

Ranges are typical published values for gasket compounds and derate at the top end under continuous pressure. EPDM and Viton/FKM cover most industrial water, steam and hydrocarbon duty; silicone suits hygienic lines; PTFE is the fallback for aggressive chemical service; graphite-reinforced grades carry the high-temperature steam and process work. FAILURE MODES

How a Sight Glass Gasket Fails

Catching a failing gasket early prevents a leak, a broken window or a process interruption. Three failure patterns account for most gasket replacements:

Extrusion

Softening under pressure

At high temperature and pressure, a softened gasket squeezes into the gap between the glass and the bore. Look for a lip or ridge at the inner edge and media staining around it - extrusion is usually followed by leakage past the sealing face.

Hardening & Cracking

Heat aging

Heat drives plasticizers out of elastomers over time. The gasket stiffens, loses its ability to recover, and develops surface cracks at the glass interface. A hardened gasket also needs more torque to seal, which can over-stress the window.

Chemical Attack

Incompatible media

Incompatible media swell, soften, discolor or disintegrate the compound. Swelling bulges the gasket into the view area, softening can end in blowout under pressure, and attack at the inner edge is usually the first visible sign.

Any of these signs means the gasket has reached end of service. Replace it with the correct compound for the media and temperature - and inspect the window and seating faces while the unit is open, since a damaged surface will shorten the life of the new gasket.

REPLACEMENT GUIDE

Fitting & Replacing a Sight Glass Gasket

Gasket replacement is a routine maintenance job, but the seal is only as good as the preparation. Follow these steps in order:

  1. Isolate and depressurize the line, then drain it. Confirm zero pressure before loosening anything.
  2. Remove the sight glass: open the tri-clamp, unbolt the flanges, or unscrew the threaded body.
  3. Remove the old gasket and clean the sealing faces with a lint-free cloth and a plastic scraper. Inspect the glass edge for chips or cracks.
  4. Verify the replacement against the order: model, connection size, material and bore must match before fitting.
  5. Fit the new gasket and align its bore with the window opening. Do not stretch a flat gasket to force it; it should seat without distortion.
  6. Reassemble evenly: tighten tri-clamp bands and threaded connections progressively, and flange bolts in a cross pattern to seat the gasket evenly.
  7. Pressure test at line pressure and check for weep at the gasket lines before returning the unit to service.

Torque matters more than it looks: too little and the gasket does not seat, too much and it extrudes or over-stresses the glass. Re-torque flanged assemblies after the first thermal cycle, when the gasket has taken its initial set.

Can I replace the gasket without replacing the glass?

Usually yes - the gasket is the service item and the glass is often still sound. Before reusing a window, inspect it for chips, cracks or etch marks on the sealing edge; if the glass is damaged, replace both together so the new seal seats on a clean surface.

What is the MOQ for gaskets?
