Oil and gas sight glasses sit on separators, scrubbers, filter housings, pressure vessels, fuel skids and pipelines — often at pressures where a failed window is a safety event, not a maintenance nuisance. The pressure rating comes from the whole assembly: glass, gasket, body and connection. Never rate a sight glass on the window alone.
Small bore and instruments. The SG-300 threaded sight glass (male NPT or BSP, 1/4"–3") is the compact choice for sampling lines, lubrication circuits and instrument hookups, rated to 100 bar (1450 psi).
Vessels and main lines. The SG-400 flanged sight glass (ANSI B16.5 Class 150/300, 2"–8") provides the large viewing window operators need for level, color and phase checks on separators, scrubbers and pipeline skids. Where temperatures run high, quartz glass is available in place of borosilicate.

For dry gas, refined products, lubricants and other non-corrosive hydrocarbons, carbon steel bodies deliver the strength at the right price — which is why the majority of oil and gas sight glass duty is carbon steel. It is the field-proven, economical default for standard service.
Step up to 316 stainless steel when the media is corrosive, when the line is sour (H2S service), or when your integrity program demands stainless wetted parts. Seals follow the same logic: FKM for hydrocarbons, PTFE for broad chemical resistance, and graphite-based gaskets for high-temperature flanged service. Tell us if the line is sour — we will recommend the metal and seal combination for the duty.

In classified areas, engineers ask whether the sight glass is explosion-proof. Because a sight glass has no electrical components, it introduces no ignition source of its own — the engineering focus is containment. The glass, gasket and body must hold process pressure, and the window must be kept in good condition so it never becomes the weak point.
That makes inspection routine: check the window for chips, cracks and etching at every shutdown; replace the gasket when it shows wear; torque flanged covers to spec on installation.
