Flanged Sight Glasses

A flanged sight glass is a viewing window bolted between two flange faces - the standard way to add visual access to chemical, petrochemical and oil & gas piping without cutting, welding or repiping. The SG-400 series is machined to ANSI B16.5 Class 150/300 and DIN PN10-PN40 patterns, in sizes from 2" to 8" (DN50-DN200), with borosilicate, soda lime or quartz windows.

What Is a Flanged Sight Glass?

A flanged sight glass - often specified simply as an ANSI sight glass - is a short body with two flange faces and a glass window through the bore. It bolts between existing flanges in a pipe run, so installation is a matter of swapping in a spool piece: no welding, no hot work permit, no pressure-system re-certification. The large window gives operators a direct view of level, flow, color, foam, carryover and contamination inside the line.

Because the flange face, bolt circle and rating must match your line exactly, the SG-400 is built around the two dominant global families: ANSI B16.5 raised-face flanges and DIN EN 1092-1 flanges. Get the class right and the sight glass drops into any standard piping specification.

ANSI Class 150/300 vs DIN PN10-PN40

Flange rating determines how much pressure the sight glass can hold and which bolt pattern it uses. The table below compares the classes SIGHTSPEC machines for the SG-400 body.

Values shown are standard flange ratings at ambient temperature; allowable pressure derates as temperature rises, and the final rating of an assembled sight glass follows the weakest component - flange, glass or gasket. Most chemical and oil & gas specifications use raised-face (RF) flanges; flat-face (FF) suits cast-iron counter-flanges, and RTJ faces are available for high-pressure services. GLASS SELECTION

Glass by Temperature: Borosilicate, Soda Lime & Quartz

Service temperature is the first question when choosing a window material. The SG-400 offers three glass options matched to the duty:

Soda Lime Glass

Up to ~250F (120C)

The economical choice for cold water and air duties where thermal shock is not a concern. Not recommended for steam tracing, hot process media or rapid temperature swings.

Borosilicate (DIN 7080)

Up to 572F (300C)

The process workhorse: chemically resistant, thermally stable and resistant to thermal shock. This is the default window for chemical, pharmaceutical and most industrial sight glass service.

Quartz (Fused Silica)

Up to ~1832F (1000C)

For furnace, stack and high-temperature duty where borosilicate softens. Quartz also offers superior thermal-shock resistance for demanding cycling service.

Note that the metal body and gasket may limit the assembly before the glass does - match all three components to your service temperature. On high-temperature SG-400 builds, carbon steel bodies are typically paired with graphite-reinforced gaskets and borosilicate or quartz windows.

APPLICATIONS

Large-Viewport Applications: Chemical Piping & Oil & Gas

The SG-400 large window exists for one reason: big processes need big eyes on them. In chemical processing, flanged sight glasses sit on reactor outlets, pump suction and discharge lines, storage tank nozzles and heat-exchanger returns, where operators watch for cavitation, carryover, crystallization and phase separation.

In oil & gas and refining, ANSI sight glasses verify flow in fuel, lube and gas systems, confirm separator levels, and provide viewports at sample points and pigging stations. The 8-inch window is also the standard solution for vessel level observation where a sight gauge is not enough.

For in-line flow verification on smaller lines, pair the SG-400 with an SG-200 sight flow indicator; for hygienic food and pharma duty, the SG-100 tri-clamp sight glass covers the sanitary range.

Flanged Sight Glass Questions

What does Class 150 or Class 300 mean on a flanged sight glass?

It is the ANSI flange rating: the maximum working pressure the flange pair can hold, derated as temperature rises. Class 150 is roughly 285 psi at ambient, Class 300 roughly 740 psi. The assembled sight glass is never rated above its flange class - the glass and gasket are selected to match.

Can flanged sight glasses handle high temperatures?

Yes, with the right combination. Borosilicate glass runs to 572F (300C), and fused quartz extends service well beyond that for furnace and high-temperature duty. Check the body material and gasket too - on carbon steel bodies with PTFE gaskets, the gasket usually sets the practical limit.

What is the largest size available?

Standard SG-400 production covers 2"-8" (DN50-DN200). Larger diameters are available through our OEM/ODM program, where the bore, glass thickness and bolt pattern are engineered to the flange class. Contact our technical team with your size and rating.

Raised face or flat face - which do I need?

Most ANSI process piping uses raised-face flanges; flat-face is used when bolting to flat counter-flanges, typically cast iron, to avoid cracking them. If you are unsure, check your existing flange face or send us a photo and we will identify it for you.

Do you supply sight glasses with shields or lighting?
