Steam systems put sight glasses at high temperature, and often at pressure: steam lines, boiler drums, steam generators, condensate systems and heat exchangers. The observation duty changes with location — water level on the drum, flow and phase on the lines, condensate quality on the return — but every location shares the same two constraints: temperature that exceeds what ordinary glass handles, and pressure that the whole assembly must contain.
Glass temperature limit. The practical ceiling for the standard borosilicate window is 572°F (300°C) — a limit set by the glass, not the metal. Below that, borosilicate to DIN 7080 is the workhorse: low thermal expansion and good resistance to clean steam and hot condensate. Above it — superheated steam, high-pressure boiler duty — the window is switched to quartz, which carries higher temperature and tolerates sharper thermal gradients. On the SG-400 flanged sight glass, both options fit the same body.
Pressure considerations. Steam-side pressure is carried by the assembly — glass, gasket, body and connection — never by the window alone. The SG-400 flanged sight glass follows its flange class (ANSI B16.5 Class 150/300 or DIN PN10–PN40), and the SG-300 threaded sight glass is rated to 100 bar (1450 psi). State operating and upset pressure: a sight glass that holds at steady state can still be challenged by cold-start transients.

THERMAL SHOCK
Glass Breakage Risk in Steam Service and How to Mitigate It
The glass rarely breaks because steam is hot — it breaks because steam is suddenly hot. Thermal shock is the stress created when one part of the window heats or cools faster than the rest: cold condensate splashing a hot glass, a cold glass hit by live steam during startup, or a rapid pressure change. Borosilicate's low thermal expansion resists this well; no glass resists it indefinitely.
Operational mitigation. Drain condensate before opening steam to a cold sight glass, pressurize slowly during warm-up, and never quench a hot glass with cold water or cold feed. A controlled warm-up buys more service life than any material upgrade.
Material mitigation. Specify the quartz window where temperatures exceed 572°F (300°C) or where thermal cycling is frequent — quartz carries heat and tolerates sharper gradients than borosilicate. Where debris or impact is a risk, fit a protective shield over the window. Graphite-reinforced gaskets keep the seal stable across the temperature swing, so the flanged joint does not leak as the assembly heats and cools.
Boiler water level observation. On boiler drums and steam generators, the sight glass doubles as a water-level observation point — a direct visual check that confirms the level instruments.
